The Prussian EV 5 was an electric locomotive procured by the Prussian Royal Railway Central Office in 1910 for trial operation with electric traction. It was initially classified as WGL for "AC goods train locomotive " and numbered 10203 , then in 1912 it was designated as EV 5 with the new Prussian classification system for electric locomotives .

After the EV 5 was taken out of service, the company number was used by a machine of the Altona harbor railway that was subsequently delivered , and this was again given the number EV 5 - in the second occupation .

construction

The locomotive had an outer frame made of sheet steel with three rigidly mounted wheelsets . At the rear end there was a fully clad driver's cab with windows all round , the roof of which carried a pantograph with two grinding bars. The individual units for the power supply and ancillary services were otherwise free-standing and attached to the frame with their own protective housings. Visually, this vehicle looked very "experimental".

Of the differently sized wheelsets, the larger wheels at the front and rear were each driven by a repulsion motor according to Winter-Eichberg using a pawl bearing drive. The smaller, middle wheel set was designed as a pure support wheel or running axle .

Electric drive

The unusual overhead line supply voltage of 6.3 kV and a frequency of 25 Hz was used on the Schöneweide – Spindlersfeld branch line from 1903 to 1905 as a result of the takeover from the trial operation.

An externally ventilated dry-type transformer on the front end of the frame was used to step down the high voltage for motor operation, as well as a toroidal-core variable transformer for power regulation .

commitment

The main use took place on the circuit of the track test track near Oranienburg, which was also equipped with an overhead line . The EV 5 was except for the visit to Altona from 1910 to 1923 the depot Oranienburg assigned.

From May 1911 it was apparently used - still as WGL 10203 - for two months at the Altona port railway to test the newly installed electrical contact line in the long tunnel there. After returning from Altona, the now EV 5 continued to be used in remote-controlled continuous operation on the circuit near Oranienburg until 1913. It is believed that it was shut down and unused during the World War and afterwards until it was officially decommissioned in 1923.
