history
After the Vilkaviškis Diocese was founded in 1926, it was decided to open a seminary . The seminar was originally set up in the Gižai Manor . In 1930 it moved to new premises in Vilkaviškis. In 1944, after the Soviet occupation, the seminar was closed. Some of the seminarians emigrated to Germany , some continued to study at the Kaunas seminary .
In 1989 it was decided to restore the seminary. Since 1997 the seminary has borne the name of Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis . The seminar began its activity in 1999 in Marijampolė. After the academic year 2004/2005, the diocese decided to close the seminar due to the very small number of seminarians. All students moved to Kaunas.
