Jurgis Matulaitis MIC (also: Georg Matulaitis , Jerzy Matulewicz ) (born April 13, 1871 in Marijampolė , † January 27, 1927 in Kaunas ) is a Lithuanian Catholic Blessed and was Archbishop of Vilnius from 1918 to 1925 and founder of the order.

Life

Jurgis Matulaitis renewed the Congregation of the Marians and acted as their superior general . In Freiburg he continued his studies and received his doctorate on orthodox theology. Matulaitis was ordained a priest in 1898, and from 1907 he taught as a professor of theology in Saint Petersburg . He was recalled from his office (from 1918) as Archbishop of Vilnius by the Curia when Vilnius fell to Poland after the end of the Russian Empire . Instead, he was tasked with preparing a concordat with Lithuania , but died unexpectedly on a visitation trip for the Holy See. He was titular Archbishop of Adulis from 1925 until his death .

beatification

Matulaitis was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1987, on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the Christianization of Lithuania .
