The Prignitz Museum at the Havelberg Cathedral is a regional and church history museum in Havelberg .
The museum was founded on August 12, 1904 by the Association for the Promotion of Local Lore in Prignitz . It was initially located on the upper floor of the monastery , opened in 1906 and directed by the medical councilor Richard Hartwich. After a short period of construction, it was the first museum in the region to show exhibitions on the history of the cathedral and the history of Prignitz in Brandenburg. In 1938 the collection was reorganized and the premises expanded. The building was damaged when the Havel Bridge was blown up in 1945; a quarter of the inventory was destroyed. In 1946 the city of Havelberg became the sponsor of the museum. The reconstruction was completed in 1951. Two years later, the Havelberg district took overthe sponsorship, the painter Kurt Henschel its management. In 1994 the district of Havelberg was transferred to the district of Stendal . In the same year the Friends and Patrons of the Prignitz Museum was founded.
The museum has more than 10,000 visitors annually. As a church and regional history museum, exhibitions on the settlement history of the Prignitz, Altmark and Havelwinkel , on the history of the cathedral and diocese and the history of the city are presented. Special exhibitions, cathedral, city and museum tours as well as an extensive educational offer are part of the institution's activities. The museum is open all year round.
