The prince weaver ( Ploceus princeps , Syn. Symplectes princeps ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of the bunting weaver ( Ploceus ).
The Latin additional species refers to the island where it occurs.
The bird is endemic to Príncipe .
The range includes tropical or subtropical wet lowland forest, secondary forest , plantations , villages and gardens.
features
The species is 18 cm tall and weighs about 30 g. It is a large, strongly built yellow weaver bird. The male has an orange-yellow to chestnut-brown head with a striking yellow iris , the upper side is yellowish-green, the tail olive-green, the wing covers are dark brown with yellow feather tips. The female has an olive-colored head, young birds have brown eyes.
The species is monotypical .

The male's singing is described as a drawn out whistling "pzeep-pzeep-pzzzzzzzzrrrr ...".
Way of life
The diet consists mainly of plant seeds , including the fruits of bananas , peppers and oil palms .
The breeding season is between May and June and August and September. The species is monogamous and only occasionally breeds in small colonies .
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
