View of Prislop

Prislop is a Roma village in the municipality of Rășinari (German Reschinar ) and is located about 15 km from Sibiu (German Hermannstadt ).

You can reach Prislop via Rășinari from the town center to the southeast over a steep hill. There is also a path through the Silberbachtal, from Cisnădioara (Eng. Michelsberg ).

description

In Prislop there is a primary school, a public telephone, a grocer, a newly built parish hall that has not yet been put into operation (2006), a water point with mountain water and electricity supply for 85% of the farms. In Prislop there are no sewers, paved roads, running water, and street lighting.

Around 250 people live in Prislop. Almost all of them are Roma. The reason is public and is made available to the needy by the mayor's office in Rășinari. Thus, homeless Romanians were also sent to Prislop.

history

It is difficult to estimate how old this Roma settlement is. The typical log cabins are mostly built from used beams, e.g. Sometimes also from discarded railway sleepers , and therefore do not provide any information on their age.

Some buildings are made of stone and tiled. These date from the " gold washer " era , around the beginning of the 20th century, when some residents were able to afford a standard of living that was comparable to that of the Romanians from the surrounding villages.

The Roma from Prislop were traditionally broom- makers and basket-weavers and have been Romanianized since time immemorial. That is, they neither speak the traditional language, nor do they wear typical Roma clothing. They have always had lively trade relations with the surrounding villages and their work has been valued.

When many Transylvanian Saxons from Michelsberg had to give up their houses after the Second World War , the Prislopers were offered new accommodation there. However, they refused to embarrass and anger the Michelsbergers in this way, in memory of the good relationships they had always maintained.

In the communist regime , the Prislopers were fully employed, and every morning the men pulled down from the hill to do their work. It was not until the early 1990s that the situation of the villagers deteriorated immensely.

Prislop today

Since 2003 there has been a low social allowance, for which three days of charitable work have to be done, which is allocated by the mayor of Rășinari. Since then, the emergency in Prislop has not been so serious.

Nevertheless, the living conditions are still difficult.

education

The adults all have a basic education. Some have even learned trades.

The village school was closed for a few years, and the result is a terrifying illiteracy among young adults and teenagers. The school has been operated regularly since 2000 and the children attend school in Rășinari from the fifth grade.

Depending on the situation in the respective family, there are now some good students.

job

The Prisloper are consistently unemployed and keep themselves afloat with broom bandages (in autumn to spring) and berry picking (in summer). Day labor in the field and in surrounding areas is also common.
