Hohe Promenade private cemetery
The Hohe Promenade private cemetery is a cemetery in the universities of the city of Zurich . It is the only non-Jewish private cemetery in the city of Zurich.
history
In 1843 the association for a private cemetery was founded. A private property that had belonged to the city fortifications until 1839 served as the area. A first draft by engineer Georg Bürkli in the French style was rejected by the association. The second draft was for an English-style cemetery, which was then realized and opened in 1848. At the same time, the Hohe Promenade municipal cemetery was built on a neighboring site , but it was closed in 1877 and cleared in 1912. The Hohe Promenade canton school was built on its premises in 1913 .
The Hohe Promenade private cemetery owes its existence to the establishment of the community cemetery of the parishes of Grossmünster , Zu Predigern and Fraumünster . Because private graves were no longer permitted in this community cemetery , an association of rich citizens was founded, which set up a private cemetery and sold graves to the members. When the city's Central Cemetery (now known as the Sihlfeld Cemetery ) was opened in 1877 , it was possible for the first time to set up family graves approved by the city.
Area and character
Barely visible above the Stadelhofen train station , the Hohe Promenade private cemetery is surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city. As a witness to an earlier phase of urban development, it forms a counterpoint to its current surroundings. The cemetery forms almost a rectangle and, with its orientation from northwest to southeast, adheres to the specifications of the urban environment. The original cemetery has largely been preserved. From the cemetery entrance opposite the cantonal school, visitors can take a wide gravel path to the center of the facility, where there is a forum. It is closed off towards the valley by a wall well.
