Pro Scientia is an Austrian student funding agency.

Funding consists in ideal terms through the interdisciplinary scientific exchange in regular semester meetings and at the annual summer academy as well as through an annual sum that is earmarked for scientific expenditure. Compared to German student funding agencies, however , the financial support is low.

A total of around 100 students and graduates are supported in this way in their academic and artistic study and research.

Funding and alignment

Pro Scientia is financed for the most part by the Austrian Bishops' Conference of the Catholic Church and by the federal government, with smaller contributions from federal states and companies. In particular, Pro Scientia promotes the examination of the conflicting areas of ethics , science and religion , but reference is not only made to Catholic teaching. The proponents of Pro Scientia are assigned to Austrian left- wing Catholicism .

Pro Scientia is run as an association. The chairman of the board is the former EU commissioner and agriculture minister Franz Fischler .

structure

Meetings of the sponsored students take place several times per semester at the university locations of Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Leoben. The recipients present and discuss their scientific work. At the annual summer academy, a continuous topic is discussed in presentations and workshops by various external speakers. Social exchange also plays an important role.

Former sponsors can join the Alumni Club in order to maintain contact, continue the interdisciplinary exchange and support the association.

admission

The applications are reviewed annually by a selection committee. Re-application is possible; graduates can be funded up to three years after their first degree.

Belonging to the Catholic Church or any other religious denomination is explicitly not a prerequisite for admission to the Pro Scientia student support organization, but the announcement expects the candidates to be willing “to deal with religious and theological issues”. An interview with a Catholic priest is currently also planned as part of the admission process.

history

Pro Scientia was founded in 1966 . The initiative came from Karl Strobl , the then university chaplain from Vienna, other founding members were the later Bishop Egon Kapellari and the biochemist and later Minister of Science Hans Tuppy , who accompanies Pro Scientia to this day. The German Cusanuswerk (not to be confused with the Austrian Canisiuswerk ) had a certain role model effect, but it was clear from the start that financial support would not be possible to the same extent.

In 2003 an initiative called " Proscientia " or " proscientia03 " was launched in the official newsletter of the Austrian Cartell Association to support the Action Community in the ÖH election . The subsequent name dispute with the Austrian student funding agency Pro Scientia forced the Cartell Association to withdraw the initiative and to post relevant information on the initiative's website.

For many years the former Vice Chancellor and Minister of Science Erhard Busek was chairman of Pro Scientia until he handed over this function to Franz Fischler in 2006.
