Probal Dasgupta (born September 19, 1953 in Calcutta , West Bengal ) is an Indian linguist . From 2007 to 2013 he was chairman of the World Esperanto Federation .

Dasgupta received his PhD from the City University of New York on the generative syntax of his mother tongue, Bengali . Since 1989 he has been Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Hyderabad . Since 2006 he has been doing lexical research at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata .

He has been an honorary member of the US Linguistics Society since 2004 .

Esperanto

As a 17-year-old Dasgupta and Kálmán Kalocsay u. a. corresponding about the translation from the works of Tagore . After the World Congress in 1977 he was a three-week volunteer at the headquarters of the Esperanto World Federation in Rotterdam and then represented the World Federation at the United Nations . From 2007 to 2013 Dasgupta was chairman of the World Federation.

He has been a member of the Esperanto Academy since 1983 , its Vice-President since 2001 and its President since 2016.
