PIF (file)
The file extension PIF ( .pif
; an abbreviation for . English program information file ) in IBM's TopView introduced and later in both Quarterdecks DESQview and in Microsoft Windows used to certain settings for running DOS - programs to remember (eg. Information about the parameters with which a program is to be started, which program is to be started, which memory settings should apply to the program, whether the program is a pure DOS application (full display) or, in the case of Microsoft Windows, whether it is in a window under Windows should be shown and which font and size should be used in the window display).
Windows
PIF files - in Explorer (up to Windows XP ) called "Link to an application for MS-DOS" and later (at the latest with Windows 7 ) "Link to MS-DOS program" or also called "Link to MS-DOS program" - are a holdover from the MS-DOS era and a forerunner of the (file) link ( .lnk
). They were to connect to 16-bit - applications used are similar Exe - Com - or Bat files bootable and are often among the executable files listed. However, this property (the practicability) can of viruses - programmers are misused computers to infect.
