National Progressive Front

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Progressive Front ( Arabic الجبهة الوطنية التقدمية, DMG al-Ǧabha al-Waṭaniyya at-Taqaddumiyya , French Front national progressiste , abbreviation FNP ), also known as the National Progress Front , is a party alliance in Syria between the Baath party , the communist parties and several bloc parties . It has existed in the country since 1972. Just one year later, a National Progressive Front was also formed in Iraq under the Baath Party ruling there .

The term one-party state does not formally apply to Syria. In fact, the Ba'ath Party dominates politics and society in the country. There is no legal opposition to be taken seriously, and no non-Baathists are represented in the inner leadership circle. The other parties united in the front are not allowed to advertise in the military and security organs as well as in high schools and universities. However, there are oppositional wings and platforms within the coalition parties that can operate more or less legally under the guise of the front.

Organization and members

The Syrian National Front (FNP) was founded in 1972, and a member of the Communist Party had already been accepted into the government in 1966. The parties on this front have an authoritarian and left-wing nationalist or revolutionary and patriotic ideology ( Islamic socialism and Arab nationalism ). Parties with other political currents have not yet been able to join the national front, but the admission of the previously anti-Baathist and therefore banned Syrian Nationalist Party in 2005 is considered a cautious opening of the Ba'ath regime since the death of Hafiz al-Assad . She resigned in 2012 to form the Popular Front for Change and Freedom with the Party of the People's Will .
