List of political parties in Syria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Many political parties in Syria have existed since the French mandate . From 1963, however, the Ba'ath Party ruled in a one -party system : Article 8 of the constitution stipulates that "the Ba'ath Arab Socialist Party governs society and the state". Since 1972 parties that accept the leadership role of the Ba'ath Party and the Arab-socialist and nationalist orientation have been allowed to act as members of the National Progressive Front (unified list).

The new constitution of 2012 grants the right to found political parties outside the National Progress Front, so far 3 parties have been approved. According to the new party law, an eligible party must have at least 50 founding members aged 25 and over who have been Syrian citizens for more than 10 years and have not been members of any other party.
