history
The Projensdorfer wood was created in 1900 after the construction of the Kiel Canal as a recreation area. Around the 37 meter high Tannenberg, the city park was created on the excavation of the canal, which the city planners designed as a forest through extensive reforestation.
The former Projensdorfer lands with an area of 225 ha previously consisted mainly of wheat farmland. There were only seven residential buildings with 52 residents in the area. Around the Tannenberg a small forest, about 20 hectares in size, was already growing, called the Projensdorfer wood . After the First World War, the city of Kiel awarded 86,000 m² of the site for the construction of residential houses on long leases .
Tannenberg animal enclosure
The Tannenberg animal enclosure is around 40 hectares and is the largest animal area managed by the city of Kiel, in which, in addition to wild boars , Scottish highland cattle , fallow deer , mouflons and roe deer are kept.
