The town church from the church square

The Protestant town church Annweiler am Trifels is next to the Trifels the landmark of the old imperial city Annweiler am Trifels . The Protestant town church on the market square was 850 years old in 2003. Its Gothic tower, the highest in Annweiler, has always dominated the cityscape.

history

In the years 1151 to 1153 a Romanesque church with a crossing tower and a small roof turret (see also the coat of arms of Annweiler ) was built on today's site. Around 1318, the church was expanded to include an early Gothic choir, which lasted until it was destroyed by bombs in 1944, and a striking northeast tower. At the end of the 15th century this church fell into disrepair and was replaced by a late Gothic hall by Philipp von Gmünd (consecrated in 1491). The sacristy was added around 1500. During the Renaissance , the church was extended by two bays to the west. Around 1730 the tower received its top floor and the impressive tower dome. In 1758 the roof collapsed, and in 1785 the church had to be closed due to dilapidation. In 1789 the baroque church of Friedrich Gerhard Wahl was completed.

The church was restored in 1928/29. On December 29, 1944, the church was completely destroyed by the British air raid, except for the tower and the north wall of the nave. From 1950 to 1953 the church was rebuilt in a modern style by Otto Seibel.

Furnishing

In addition to the tower from 1318, the colorful choir windows from 1952 with scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and the Old and New Testaments are worth seeing.

staff

Jürgen Reinhardt is currently the pastor in the church. In addition, 14 presbyters work in the parish.
