Protoscaphirhynchus is a prehistoric genus of ray fins that is closely related to today's paddle sturgeon . So far it is only known from the late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation in the northwest of the USA . The only known species is Protoscaphirhynchus squamosus .

origin

The fossils were found in sandstone in the Hell Creek Formation (Bear Creek / Rock Creek), 39 km southeast of Fort Peck, Montana , in 1938 when a paleontological expedition from the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology searched the site. The fossils were close to the holotype specimens of the also extinct species Paleopsephurus wilsoni . The "Specimen UMMP 22210", which is kept in the collection of the Museum of Paleontology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor , is part of the skeleton.

Systematics

The genus is characterized by the fact that, on the one hand, the typical physique of Scaphirhynchus is recognizable, while on the other hand, the entire body seems to be covered with bone plates, which are otherwise only present as individual rows in today's sturgeon species .

Surname

The name of the genus and the species is composed of several Latin and Greek terms:

  • Proto - from Latin "first, first, in advance, originally"
  • scapha from Latin "boat" (boat-shaped)
  • rhynchos from Greek "Rhino" (ῥινό) nose

and

  • squamosus from Latin "scaly".
