The Hunan Provincial Museum ( Chinese 湖南省 博物館 / 湖南省 博物馆 , Pinyin Húnán shěng bówùguǎn ) is located in the provincial capital Changsha . It is the largest and most important museum in Hunan Province and one of the so-called 8 imposing museums in China outside of Beijing . The archaeological excavation of Mawangdui was decisive for the expansion of his collection . With these finds, it is one of the representative collections of Chinese culture in the Han Dynasty . Due to construction work, the entire museum will probably be closed until the end of 2015.
history
The first provincial museum was established as a division of the library in 1904 and closed the following year. The second provincial museum opened on June 24, 1924 and burned due to the war in 1930. The third museum was opened in Märtyrerpark in 1956 and at that time served as a diverse regional museum for art and natural history as well as geography and folklore.
After the Mawangdui holdings are acquired, the archaeological cultural heritage will steadily become the majority of the collection. This is why the museum has been focusing on art history since the 1970s.
