Palm Island ( German "Palmeninsel" ) is a small island in the Caribbean that belongs to the island state of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . It is located about 1.6 km east of Union Island and has a total area of around 0.55 km². Since the island is completely covered with a private hotel complex , the Palm Island Resort , and accordingly mainly tourists and staff stay there, no population is reported for Palm Island.
geography
Palm Island is geographically assigned to the Grenadines . The land area is only crossed by a few hills - the highest point is about 45 meters above sea level - and is surrounded by white sandy beaches. The vegetation consists mainly of palm trees that were only planted in the 1960s. As on all the islands of the Grenadines, Palm Island has a tropical- maritime climate .
history
Originally the island was named Prune Island . It was uninhabited and largely free of vegetation; the interior of the land area was swampy. It was only after John and Mary Caldwell signed a lease agreement with the government of the island state in 1966 for a period of 99 years at an annual fee of one US dollar that the island's appearance changed. First, John Caldwell planted countless palm trees and thus gave the island its new name. The couple then devoted themselves to building a hotel complex, the Palm Island Beach Club . After more than 30 years, the facility was transferred to new owners in 1999 and then fundamentally renovated and expanded.
