The Psammosteidae are an extinct taxon of marine vertebrates . They belonged to the Heterostraci , a subgroup of the Pteraspidomorphi , with which the Psammosteidae belonged to the jawless ( Agnatha ), i.e. H. to distant relatives of today's fish.

Fossils of the Psammosteidae can be found in the Silurian and Devonian (430-370 million years ago). They had skull armor, but not a jaw. Compared to the other Heterostraci, which reached a length of 5 - 30 cm, the Psammosteidae were significantly larger with up to 150 cm.
