Features and way of life

Pseudantechinus bilarni is an insectivorous species. It is partly diurnal and differs from other members of its genus by its long, narrow mouth and its rather greyish color. The mating season is between May and July.

This pouch mouse is native to the rocky areas around the Top End and the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory . It also lives on the coastal rock platforms of Marchinbar Island ( Wessel Islands ).

The IUCN lists them as near threatened .

Taxonomy

Pseudantechinus bilarni was in 1948 when Australian-American expedition to Arnhem Land discovered, but not until six years later, in 1954 described . The specific epithet bilarni reflects the name of the Australian writer and naturalist William Edward ("Bill") Harney in the pronunciation of the Aborigines . Harney had been part of the expedition.

Initially, Pseudantechinus bilarni was placed in the genus Antechinus or Parantechinus . It was only assigned to the fat-tailed pouch mice in 2000, but this classification (together with the classification of Pseudantechinus woolleyae ) could make the genus paraphyletic .
