Pseudocyttus maculatus is a marine fish from the order of the St. Peter's fish-like (Zeiformes). It occurs mainly in the southern hemisphere of the earth. Sites in the South Atlantic are the coasts of Uruguay , Argentina , the Falkland Islands and the coasts of Namibia and South Africa , as well as the Antarctic Bellingshausen Sea . In the southern Pacific, the fish was found on the coast of southern Chile , near New Zealand , Tasmania and New South Wales , and in the Indian Ocean near the Kerguelen .
features
Pseudocyttus maculatus becomes a maximum of 68 centimeters long and weighs five kilograms, but usually remains at a length of 40 centimeters. The long-lived fish can reach an age of 100 years. They are high back and strongly flattened on the sides. Young fish are silvery with numerous dark spots of different sizes. The spots expand with age and displace the silvery color. Adult fish are colored chocolate brown with darker fins. The dorsal fin is supported by five to seven spines and 33 to 36 soft rays. The anal fin has two to three fin spines and 31 to 34 soft rays.
Way of life
Fully grown Pseudocyttus maculatus live above the sea floor on the edges of the continental shelves at depths of 400 to 1500, mostly between 900 and 1100 meters. They feed mainly on salps . The fish do not undertake vertical migration. The pelagic eggs and larvae float near the sea surface. Young fish also live close to the surface of the water, usually near schools of krill .
use
The fish are fished commercially and come onto the market in German-speaking countries under the trade name of New Zealand St. Peter's Fish .
