Pseudophoxinus egridiri (Turkish common name: Yag Baligi) is a rare freshwater fish species from the carp family (Cyprinidae). It used to occur in the tributaries of the Turkish Eğirdir Gölü (Eğirdir Lake), today its range is limited to a source that is connected to the Eğirdir Gölü.

features

Pseudophoxinus egridiri is a small species that reaches a total length of 6.1 cm. The body is slender, somewhat flattened on the sides and covered with small scales. The mouth is terminal or slightly upwards. The number of dorsal rays is eight. The anal fin usually has six, more rarely seven soft rays. The number of lateral line scales is 43 to 54. There are two porous lateral lines. The number of fangs is four to five. There are seven to nine (rarely ten) thorn traps on the first gill arch. The number of vertebrae is 35 to 36 (rarely 34 to 37). The back is dark gray or brownish. The flanks and belly are light yellow or whitish.

Habitat and way of life

The habitat includes temperate standing (lentic) and flowing (lotic) waters with lush vegetation. The diet of Pseudophoxinus egridiri consists of insect larvae. Nothing is known about the reproductive behavior of this species.

status

The IUCN lists Pseudophoxinus egridiri in the category “ critically endangered ”. In 1955 the pikeperch ( Sander lucioperca ) was introduced in the Eğirdir Gölü and its tributaries, which so reenacted the small endemic fish species that the extinction of Pseudophoxinus egridiri was feared in the mid-1980s . In 1993, however, a population was rediscovered in a spring near the Eğirdir Gölü. The pikeperch was also detected there, so far Pseudophoxinus egridiri seems to find protection from the stalking of the predatory fish in the vegetation of this spring.
