The big mouth catfish (Pseudopimelodidae) live with seven genera and over 40 species in South America from the Río Atrato in Colombia to the Río de la Plata in Argentina .

features

The fish are 11 to 80 centimeters long, depending on the species, the name of the genus Microglanis suggests small specimens, which reach lengths of two to eight centimeters. The freshwater fish have small eyes, wide mouths and short barbels. They are usually brown in color, often with light and dark transverse bands. Small species are popular aquarium fish.

Systematics

The Pseudopimelodidae used to belong as a subfamily to the antenna catfish (Pimelodidae). Today they are the only family of the superfamily Pseudopimelodoidea.
