Microglanis is a genus of freshwater fish from the family of the great mouth catfish (Pseudopimelodidae). It occurs in South America east of the Andes from northern Venezuela to the river basin of the Río de la Plata .

features

Microglanis species have a relatively short body, flattened at the tail stalk, without scales, a head that is as wide as it is long, and small eyes. The mouth is just as wide as the head. The barbels are short and only occasionally reach the base of the pectoral fins. The microglanis species differ from other big-mouth catfish mainly in their small size (maximum 8 cm) and the reduced lateral line , of which only rudimentary channels and barely visible pores are present in the rear third of the body. They are generally orange-brown in color and patterned with large dark brown spots. In German, the fish are also known as harlequin catfish or bumblebee catfish because of this color .

species

Fishbase lists over 20 species. The genus Microglanis thus represents more than half of all species of the great mouth catfish.
