The psychedelic rock gecko ( Cnemaspis psychedelica ) is a species of lizard from the genus Cnemaspis in the gecko family (Gekkonidae). It was only discovered in 2009 and scientifically described in 2010. The distribution area is limited to the small islands of Hon Khai and Hon Tuong in the province of Cà Mau , off the south coast of Vietnam . The art epithet refers to the luminous, inconsistent pattern that is reminiscent of the psychedelic color patterns of the hippie era .

features

Adult males reach a head-trunk length of 75.3 mm and adult females a head-trunk length of 72.2 mm. The small, robust body is weakly keeled. The dorsal scales are roughly the same size and mixed all over the body with slightly larger, slightly keeled tubercles, which are more or less longitudinally arranged, especially in the vertebral area.

The psychedelic rock gecko differs from all other Southeast Asian species of the genus Cnemaspis by its color pattern in both sexes and in all age groups. The forelimbs, hands, feet and tail are bright orange. The dorsal scale dress is blue-gray. The flanks have three or four yellowish cross bars. The nape of the neck is characterized by a light yellow mesh pattern, which is covered with thick, black longitudinal lines. The head is greenish.

status

The psychedelic rock gecko was included in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species (CITES) and in the “endangered” category of the IUCN Red List in 2016 . Since 2013, the species has been regularly on sale legally in Europe and the Russian Federation, for 2,500 to 3,000 euros per pair. The current classification now prohibits the purchase of the geckos. In 2014, with the help of Thomas Ziegler from the Cologne Aquarium, a conservation breeding facility was put into operation on the island of Hòn Mê , where the world's first breeding of the psychedelic rock gecko in human care was achieved in 2015.
