Ptenidium gressneri is a beetle fromthe dwarf beetle family (Ptiliidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 0.8 to 0.9 millimeters. The body is short, elliptical and arched and has a glossy reddish brown color. It is hardly structured in dots and is smooth. The head is a little darker in color. The pronotum is broadest at the base and tapers towards the front. It is firmly attached to the cover wings and forms a bulge with them in one go. The side edge is almost invisible. The antennae and legs are yellow.

Occurrence and way of life

The species occurs in Northern and Central Europe. The northern limit of distribution extends from England, over Denmark and the south of Sweden. The southern limit of distribution runs through Spain, France, Central Europe, Hungary and Romania as well as the Caucasus . A distribution of the species in Italy has not been fully investigated. In Central Europe the species occurs everywhere, but is rare everywhere. The animals live in the sludge of hollow tree trunks and often also myrmekophil in the garden ants ( Lasius ).
