Pterocactus valentinii is a species of the genus Pterocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae).
description
Pterocactus valentinii remains small and forms only a few above-ground shoots. The shoots often have long, subterranean and thin parts and are not very branched. The above-ground, green and cylindrical shoots are 4 to 8 inches long and 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. 25 to 30 radiating and glassy thorns that are 0.4 to 2 centimeters long sit on the non-woolly areoles . They cannot be differentiated into central and radial spines.
The yellow to copper-colored, sometimes reddish flowers are up to 4 inches long and 3 inches wide. The yellowish pink fruits are up to 2 centimeters in diameter and are thorny.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Pterocactus valentinii is distributed in southern Argentina in the provinces of Mendoza , Neuquén and Chubut on the Patagonian plains at altitudes of up to 1000 meters. The species was first described in 1899 by Carlos Luis Spegazzini .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
