The naked back bats ( Pteronotus ) are a genus from the family of the chin-leaf bats (Mormoopidae), whose representatives are native to Central and South America.

description

Representatives of the bare-back bats have a head-trunk length of 40–70 mm, a tail length of 15–30 mm and a forearm length of 35–65 mm. The lower lip has a plate-like outgrowth and small protuberances (papillae). The animals have a well-developed tail and no nosepiece . The wings of Pteronotus davyi , P. paraguanensis and P. parnellii are connected to each other on the back above the fur, which gives the appearance that the back of the animals is hairless. In all other species, like other bats , the wings are attached to the side of the body.

Way of life

The naked back bats , like most bats, are nocturnal and feed on insects. They inhabit a variety of different habitats , which is underlined by their wide distribution. During the day, the animals are mostly found in caves, galleries and tunnels, rarely in buildings. Some species also rest in the hollow structures of plants, such as bamboo .

Types and distribution

There are currently seven recent species. An extinct form - Pteronopus pristinus - is known from the late Pistocene of Cuba.
