The MacLeay whiskered bat ( Pteronotus macleayii ) is a species of bat from the jaw-leaf bat family (Mormoopidae), which is native to the Greater Antilles . The species is named after the naturalist William Sharp Macleay who collected the holotype .

description

The MacLeay mustache bat is a small bat with an average total length of 74.2 mm and a weight of 4.1 to 7.5 g. The fur is gray-brown to yellowish-brown, with a lighter belly. The individual hairs are three-colored on the back with an olive-brown base, a light central part and a dark brown tip. The ears are narrow and pointed and not connected on the head. The tragus is long and grooved. Pteronotus macleayii differs from P. personatus by the longer snout and lateral tips on the nostrils. In contrast to P. quadridens , Pteronotus macleayii has a V-shaped pad between the nostrils. The forearm length is 39.9–45.1 mm, that of P. quadridens less than 41 mm.

Way of life

The MacLeay mustache bat, like most bats, is nocturnal and feeds on insects, with two-winged bats (Diptera) making up over half of the diet, followed by beetles (Coleoptera), grasshoppers (Orthoptera) and constant-winged birds (Homoptera). The complex echolocation calls have four overtones, range between 70 and 80 kHz and are therefore not audible to the human ear.

The MacLeay mustache bat is common in its range. The animals spend the day in warm, moist caves, whereby the colonies can consist of several thousand individuals. In the same cave walls, other bat species such as the Jamaican fruit bat ( Artibeus jamaicensis ) brachyphylla nana , buffy flower bat , Macrotus waterhousii , redmani monophyllus , blainvillii Mormoops , Natalus lepidus , N. major , N. micropus , Phyllonycteris aphylla P. poeyi , Pteronotus parnellii and P. quadridens . However, the species hang separately from each other and do not mix.

The MacLeay whiskered bat is monoestrous and gives birth to a single young each year.
