The Lesser Cuban funnel tube ( Chilonatalus micropus ) is a bat in the funnel tube family (Natalidae) that is found in the Caribbean . The species was listed in the genus Natalus until 2003 . features

With a forearm length of 31 to 36 mm and a weight of 2 to 3 g, the Little Kuba Funnel Tube is the smallest bat in the New World . Like other family members, it has large, funnel-shaped ears and a small nasal blade that is covered with hair. The species has long, narrow wings and a tail that is completely enclosed by the tail membrane. The long, dense fur is made up of hair on the top, which is yellow-brown at the base and has a red-brown tip. The underside is covered with uniform yellow-brown fur.

There is another bare fold of skin under the lower lip. The small Kuba funnel tube has three incisors on each side in the upper and lower jaw, with a gap ( diastema ) between the second and third . Furthermore, the small canines are exposed. The premolars are close together and the three molars are identical in construction.

distribution

This bat occurs in Cuba , Jamaica , Hispaniola and on the Colombian archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia . Occasionally it reaches the east coast of Central America on hikes. There is no information about the preferred habitat .

Way of life

Colonies of several hundred specimens rest together in caves, mine tunnels or tunnels. They hunt flying insects with the help of echolocation . Females pregnant with an embryo were recorded at different times.

status

Like other bats, the small Kuba funnel tube is sensitive to disturbances in the resting place. Since there are only a limited number of suitable caves available, the species is listed by the IUCN in the early warning list (Near Threatened).
