Pterotmetus staphyliniformis is a bug fromthe Rhyparochromidae family .
features
The bugs become 5 to 5.5 mm long. The basic color of the bedbugs is black. The corium of the forewings is red-brown. The species is usually micropter, i.e. has receded wings, but macroptere (fully winged) individuals also occur. The macropter bugs are mostly females. The femora of the front pair of legs are particularly strong. The legs are almost entirely black. Only the base of the femora of all pairs of legs is colored red. The thorax and abdomen of the nymphs are initially almost completely red. In the following stages these become darker and darker. In the last nymph stage, the bug is black. The bugs double or triple their size from one stage of development to the next.
distribution
The type of bug is widespread in Europe, but not common. Its distribution area extends in Europe in the north to southern Scandinavia and also includes the British Isles. To the east, the occurrence of Pterotmetus staphyliniformis extends to Inner Asia and China.
Way of life
The animals mainly live on the ground, where they suckle on seeds. The species prefers dry habitats. Often we find the bugs in heather ( Calluna vulgaris ) and tansy . The adults hibernate. Mating usually takes place between April and early May. The eggs are later laid by the female. The adult bugs of the new generation appear from mid-July. In mid-August, several nymph stages and an imago of the bug species could be observed on a faded tansy. The adult bug may act as a protector of the nymphs, as it drove away a much larger knight bug nymph from the plant.
Stages of development
The following pictures show several stages of development of Pterotmetus staphyliniformis as a nymph.
