Peter Samuel Schilling (born April 10, 1773 in Juliusburg , † December 15, 1852 in Breslau ) was a German entomologist .

Life

After education at secondary school in Hirschberg he studied in Halle until 1795 theology , then philology . From 1795 to 1797 he was a teacher at the pension institution in Bunzlau . In 1798 he taught natural history at the traditional Maria Magdalenen grammar school in Breslau . In 1843 he was retired.

During his teaching time, he published magazines and books that served the general education of children and young people. From 1801 to 1806 the youth publication Emil, or instructive conversations for the youth , was illustrated with copper . The material came from geography , history , technology , natural history and travel stories . Scenes from children, anecdotes , puzzles and calculation tasks are intertwined in it. The war and a lack of sales led to the writing being discontinued. It was replaced in 1810 by the Silesian Child Friend , which was also discontinued due to the low demand. Other publications are The Microscope for the Dissemination of Human Knowledge (1803), Museum of Nature (1834 and 1835) and Plan of Natural History for High Schools (1838). At the beginning of 1840 Heinrich Richter in Breslau published a new work by Schilling “every month two numbers”: “Silesian childhood friend or entertaining teachings from the areas of geography and ethnology, natural history, physics, chemistry. of the arts and crafts ”. The booklets are illustrated with colored plates ( lithographs ). This font was also discontinued after the second year in 1842.

In his free time, Samuel Schilling devoted himself to researching the insect fauna of his homeland. He was a member of the Entomology Association in the Silesian Society for Patriotic Culture. Here he published a number of his scientific contributions.
