Ptolemy (Commagene)
Ptolemy ( ancient Greek Πτολεμαίος ) was the first king of Commagene in 163 BC. Chr.
Ptolemy was of Armenian-Iranian origin and came from the Orontid dynasty . He was from about 170 to 163 Epistates of Kommagene. When the empire of the Seleucids , under whose rule Kommagene was, fell apart from 163, Ptolemy decided to revolt and declared Kommagene an independent kingdom. Ptolemy made Samosata , the capital of the province of Kommagene, the capital.
Ptolemy was a relative of King Mithridates I and thus also related to the Parthian royal dynasty. According to an inscription on Mount Nemrut , he was a descendant of Darius I. Ptolemy died in 130 BC. His wife's name is unknown. His son and successor was Samos II. Theosebes Dikaios .
