Puan Klent

The Hamburg youth recreation center Puan Klent on Sylt is a youth hostel . The house is operated by the foundation of the same name. A station of the Wadden Sea Protection Station is located in the house.

history

The location of today's youth sanctuary is a former military barracks camp from the First World War . Around 1919 Sylt was still a largely undeveloped island. Until 1951 there were z. B. between Westerland and Hörnum no other connection than the island railway .

The doctor Knud Ahlborn was so convinced of the health benefits of the North Sea climate that in 1918/19 he looked for accommodation for malnourished children and young people from Hamburg and Altona . He took over the barrack camp Groß Vlie (Frisian: alluvial land) with its large mudflat meadows. The Hamburg Youth Association finally acquired the property and began renovating a youth camp on October 1, 1919. The name was changed to "Pauns Klint" (Pauls Kliff) based on a nearby dune. This became Puan Klent in 1929/1930 .

In 1972 the entire Rantum dune landscape was placed under protection with the exception of the home area and its access roads. In 1984 sanitary rooms were added to the boys 'house, in 1993 to the girls' house. Since then, numerous structural measures to modernize the plant have been undertaken.

On December 19, 2017, the Puan Klent Foundation, which operates the convalescent home, filed for bankruptcy. After the required funds in the amount of 380,000 euros were made available through a donation from the Hamburg Authority for Labor, Social Affairs, Family and Integration as well as private donations, the bankruptcy application was withdrawn on January 31, 2018 and scheduled operations were resumed.
