Public Interest Registry (PIR for short) is the generic Top Level Domain ( gTLD ) .org competent registry . Founded in 2002 as a not-for-profit organization , it is headquartered in Reston, Virginia. PIR is considered a pioneer in the introduction of DNSSEC .

history

Originally the top-level domain .org was administered by VeriSign . In the course of the liberalization of the market, ICANN decided in October 2002 to hand over the administration of the gTLD to the Internet Society (ISOC). This was primarily intended to prevent VeriSign from attaining a monopoly on the most important domains. For the operations of .org, the ISOC founded the Public Interest Registry in the form of a not-for-profit company.

Effective January 1, 2003, .org was finally handed over by VeriSign to PIR. Afilias is responsible for the technical operation of the top-level domain , which .org is responsible for as part of its Global Registry Services division .

The number of registered .org domains rose to more than 10 million by July 2012. Along with VeriSign (.com and .net) and DENIC (.de), PIR was one of the three largest issuing agencies worldwide.

In 2013 it was announced that PIR had applied for .ngo and .ong as part of the program to introduce new top-level domains . These should complement the .org namespace and, in particular, take into account the popularity of the ending among non-governmental organizations (NGOs). In February 2013, PIR started accepting initial reservations for the two top-level domains.
