Puccinia gaudiniana is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of winter onions , snake leeks and ear oats . Symptoms of infestation by the species are black-brown spots of rust on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. The distribution area includes the western Mediterranean.

features

Macroscopic features

Puccinia gaudiniana can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds emerging on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as brown to black spots and pustules on the leaf and stem surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of Puccinia gaudiniana grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Your parts of the species are egg-like or line-like shaped and black-brown to black and 0.2-1.5 × 0.2-0.5 mm in size. The teleutospores are one- to two-celled, elongated to club-like in shape, smooth or with lines and are 34–72 × 38–60 µm in size. They are maroon, their stem is short, thick and light brown. Pycnias, uredia and aecidia have not yet been described in detail.

distribution

Puccinia gaudiniana has a distribution area that extends over the western Mediterranean region of Africa and Europe.

ecology

The host plants of Puccinia gaudiniana are Haplont winter onions ( Allium fistulosum ), snake leek ( Allium scorodoprasum ) and ear oats ( Gaudinia fragilis ) for the dicaryote . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species has a development cycle with pycnias, uredia, telia and aecidia.
