Puerto Edén , also called Villa Puerto Edén , in Kawesqar Jetarktétqal , is a hamlet on the east coast of the Chilean island of Wellington on the Messier Canal . Puerto Edén is located in the municipality of Natales in the province of Última Esperanza in the Región de Magallanes y de la Antártica Chilena .

Puerto Edén is known as the hometown of the last Kawesqar . The approximately 300 inhabitants (176 inhabitants according to the 2002 census) are almost exclusively fishermen.

history

In 1937 the Chilean Air Force set up a station on the Messier Canal for refueling and repairing seaplanes , as the water conditions here are calm. The planes were to provide a fast connection from Puerto Montt to Punta Arenas on the Strait of Magellan . The place has also been inhabited by civilians since around 1940, but Puerto Edén was not officially founded until 1969.

tourism

The small settlement is called at once a week by the ships of the Chilean inland shipping company Navimag on their journeys south and north. However, notable tourism has not yet developed until 2011.
