Playa Bacocho near Puerto Escondido |
Puerto Escondido (in English "hidden harbor") is a city in Mexico on the Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca . The city is above all a destination for surfers and bodyboarders . It has about 25,000 inhabitants (2010 census) and belongs to the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec (District 22) .
The city was discovered by surfers in the late 1950s and has seen moderate tourist development since then. Puerto Escondido is famous for the so-called Mex Pipe , a tubular wave at Playa Zicatela, which, together with a similar wave near Hawaii, is one of the largest waves of its kind in the world. It reaches a height of up to ten meters in autumn.
Numerous beaches can be reached from the city. Playa Bacocho is located in the west, towards Acapulco , and with its length of 1.4 kilometers is the second largest beach after Playa Zicatela. This is followed from west to east by Playa Carrizalillo, Playa Angelito, Bahía Principal and finally Playa Zicatela, in the far east towards Puerto Ángel and Huatulco.
Thanks to the southern location of Puerto Escondido, there is a mild climate even in the winter months and the sea water temperature averages 25 degrees Celsius.
