The Pulvermühlschleuse is a historic water lock in Augsburg . It is named after a powder mill that was located here until the 19th century. It is an important technical monument that shows the pre-industrial lock technology of the Lech canals .

Location and function

The lock is located on Damaschkeplatz (named after Adolf Damaschke ) near Friedberger Straße in the Spickel district ( Spickel-Herrenbach planning area ). At the lock, the Kaufbach canal branches off in a straight line from the Hauptstadtbach canal ; the rest of the water flow turns right at this point, crosses under Friedberger Strasse and is called Herrenbach from here on. Immediately upstream, a section of the capital stream is designed as a bathing area, with a water watch station and a public toilet (only open in summer).

The lock separates the part of the water flow that is directed into the Augsburg Lechviertel and Jakobervorstadt (around 14 cubic meters of water per second) from the part that flows through the Augsburg textile district (around 21 cubic meters of water per second).

History and technology

The lock was built in the early 19th century using an 18th century technology. With muscle power, a heavy protective board in the stream could be lowered or raised using the construction of a wooden sprocket wheel with gear drive and corrugated tree . Thanks to the translations, the operator was able to achieve 25 times his climbing force (approx. 1.5 t). The combined foot brake and kickback protection are more recent.

In addition to the historical wooden construction, an electric motor wind mechanism was installed in an iron construction around 1955. In 1982 the powder mill sluice was restored.
