Powder Tower in Greiz

The Powder Tower is located on the northern outskirts of Greiz .

In order to enable the Reuss-Greiz military to safely store the gunpowder supply outside the city, the tower was built in 1841 on a rocky spire of the Roth mountain. The location is 325 m above sea level. NHN on Pohlitz corridor. The powder tower is made of red bricks, has a floor area of 14 m², is about 12 m high, has a four-sided pointed roof and a tower of the same shape at each of the four corners.

With the introduction of breech loaders by the Greiz military after the German War , the tower lost its original purpose in 1866. After the remaining gunpowder had been sold to the Schützengesellschaft, the powder tower was used for some time to store material for ice blasting on the White Elster .

After several roof repairs, the functionless structure threatened to be demolished at the beginning of the 20th century. The Greizer Regent Heinrich XXVII. determined, however, that the tower should be preserved and provided the necessary funds.

After the First World War, the condition of the powder tower deteriorated again. The roof in particular was in urgent need of renovation. This time it was the Greiz paper manufacturer Felix Günther who made the necessary work possible in 1924 with a donation. In addition to the roof repairs, the windows and doors were bricked up to prevent vandalism and vagabonding in the tower.

The powder tower continued to fall into disrepair after the Second World War. At the beginning of the 1980s, the roof structure could no longer be saved and unreasonable visitors made holes in the masonry, which were enlarged by the effects of the weather. A birch tree approx. 2 m high grew out of the main roof.

In 1981 the last repair was made. The holes in the masonry were sealed, the upper part of the tower was removed about a meter and rebuilt. The roof had to be completely replaced.

Today the location of the Powder Tower is a popular vantage point, which is most easily reached via the hiking trail that starts at the exit of the Krümmetal and leads uphill behind the “ Anna Seghers ” nursing home .
