The 40 meter high powder tower in Straubing is part of the medieval city fortifications .
The round defensive tower made of brick with a conical roof dates from the end of the 15th century and forms the northwest corner of the enclosure of the old town.
Conversions
In the 19th century the powder tower was used by the Landwehr as an armory . From 1845 on there were museum displays of objects from this armory in the powder tower, which marked the beginning of the collection history of the Gäubodenmuseum . Since 1963 the Powder Tower has served as a “memorial for all victims of the First and Second World Wars and National Socialism”. Inside is the bronze group “Victims and Sufferers” by Karl Reidel .
Namesake
The ice stadium at the Powder Tower got its name after the nearby tower.
