Pumalín Park
The Pumalín Park (Spanish: Parque Pumalín) is a nature conservation project of the US millionaire Douglas Tompkins . It is located in the south of Chile , between Hornopirén and Chaitén . With an area of around 290,000 hectares , Pumalín is the largest private park in the country. This makes the park as big as Saarland and Hamburg put together.
The park was established to protect the so-called temperate rainforest . It comprises the last large contiguous forest area in Chile. Tompkins also bought areas that had been deforested by cattle farmers and the logging industry . Every year, 300,000 native trees and other plants are planted in Pumalín Park. This is an attempt to restore the original nature.
Pumalín Park is not only a nature reserve, but also an employer for the local population. This is how the women in the area knit clothes. For this they use wool from sheep that are kept in the park. Fruit and vegetables are also organically grown and sold nationwide.
In August 2006, the Chilean state declared the area a protected area.
The park was temporarily closed because of the eruptions of the nearby Chaitén volcano . It has been open again since mid-December 2010.
criticism
The fishing industry feels restricted in its old rights by the park and is fighting against expansion in court.
Many salmon farms have been established in the fjords along the coast of the park . They pollute the waters with their artificial breeding fodder, the excretions of the animals and the use of medicines.
