The Entracque pumped storage power plant in the Italian municipality of Entracque , Province of Cuneo (CN), Piedmont region consists of three reservoirs, Lago della Piastra as the lower basin and two upper basins, the larger Lago del Chiotas and the smaller Lago della Rovina , and also of two power plant buildings, the Chiotas-Piastra and Rovina-Piastra , in which the turbines, generators and pumping equipment are housed and which connect the shared lower basin with one of the two upper basins with pressure pipes . Planning work began in 1962 and operations began in 1982. With a bottleneck capacity of 1.32 GW for the entire power plant, it is one of the largest pumped storage power plants in Europe.
Power plants
The shared lower reservoir consists of an 88 m high gravity dam and has a capacity of 12 million m 3 . Of this, 9 million m 3 can effectively be pumped into the upper two reservoirs if required.
Chiotas-Piastra plant
Chiotas-piastra is the larger of the two power plants with a capacity of 1.184 GW and a height of fall of the Lago del Chiotas to the Lago della piastra m from the 1048th Chiotas-Piastra comprises a total of 8 pumps. The upper storage basin Lago del Chiotas , which belongs to the system, has a usable capacity of 27.3 million m 3 and is bordered by two dams .
Rovina-Piastra plant
Rovina-Piastra is the smaller of the two power plants with a nominal output of 133.67 MW and a head from the Lago della Rovina to the Lago della Piastra of 598 m. Rovina-Piastra includes a pump. The upper storage basin Lago della Rovina , which is part of the system, has a capacity of 1.2 million m 3 and is contained by a 10 m dam .
