Punta América is a prominent headland at the southern end of Adelaide Island west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It protrudes into Marguerite Bay .
The British navigator John Biscoe discovered them on February 15, 1832. Participants of the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot visited them in 1909. Argentine scientists named them in 1961 in honor of the American double continent .
