Punta Loyola

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Punta Loyola is a place in the Güer Aike department in the province of Santa Cruz in Argentina .

The place is about 20 km east of the provincial capital of Santa Cruz, Río Gallegos , on the southern side of the estuary ( Ria ) of the Río Gallegos , where it opens into the South Atlantic . On the north side of the Ria is the Estancia Cabo Buen Tiempo and a point of the coast guard of the same name about 7 km north .

The RN 40 , the longest road in Argentina, and the railway line that connects the deposits of the Rio Turbio (Yacimiento Rio Turbio / YCRT) with the Muelle Presidente Illia , the loading quay, meet in Punta Loyola . This is where both coal and crude oil are stored. There are several oil and gas wells in the area around Punta Loyola.

Punta Loyola is a destination for the residents of Santa Cruz and the province because there since 1911, the steel hull of the Norwegian flag running and built in Scotland in 1892 Bark Marjorie Glen is located on the beach. On September 19, 1911, the crew set the windjammer aground after the 1,800 tons of coal from Newcastle in northern England had self-ignited. The cargo was destined for the Braun and Blanchard trading house in Santa Cruz.
