The Purpurbrustkotinga ( Querula purpurata ) is a neotropical passerine bird from the family of ornamental birds. The bird is also called Pioho . He is the only representative of the genus Querula .

features

The 28 cm long Purpurbrustkotinga is a relatively large ornamental bird with black plumage, long, rounded wings and a broad beak. The male has a throat shield made of elongated purple-red feathers.

Occurrence

The bird inhabits the upper floors of the trees of tropical or subtropical rainforests in Costa Rica , Panama and in the northern parts of South America to northern Bolivia and the Amazon basin in Brazil .

behavior

The bird lives in small family groups and joins mixed groups, especially when looking for food. The diet consists of fruits and insects.

Reproduction

Several males come together for courtship and shout loudly in a treetop, bob their tails and flap their wings. The purple-violet throat shield is fluffed up during the courtship display. The female lays a single egg in a shallow shell nest made of branches in the treetops and incubates it on her own. The other members of the family association also help with the rearing of the young bird.
