Puruándiro is a city in the north of the Mexican state Michoacán with 30,571 inhabitants (2010). It is the capital of the Municipio Puruándiro administrative unit .
The name means "place of boiling water" in the language of the Purépecha (because of the nearby thermal springs). In pre-colonial times it was part of the Purépecha Empire and was conquered for Spain in 1527 by Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán . It got its town charter on June 16, 1858 by Epitacio Huerta under the name Puruándiro de Calderón.
