PV Sindhu is the daughter of the volleyball players PV Ramana and P. Vijaya. She took part in the Uber Cup with the Indian national team in 2010 . The team was fifth at this World Cup for women teams, where it was eliminated in the quarter-finals against China. In 2010 she won silver in the women's singles at Iran International . In the junior division, she was third at the 2009 Asian Youth Championships and fifth at the 2010 World Junior Championships. At the Indian Grand Prix 2009 she was fifth in singles and ninth in doubles. As the first player from India, she won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2013. In the following year she reached third place again. In 2015 she was in the final of a BWF Super Series tournament for the first time, but lost to the Chinese Li Xuerui at the Denmark Open. In 2016 she won the silver medal in the women's singles at the Olympic Games and in 2019 the gold medal at the World Championships. This makes her the first Indian woman to win a silver medal at the Olympic Games or a gold medal at the Badminton World Championships.
