The Pygoscelis ( pygoscelis ; after . Greek "pygoskelis" = "Lappentaucher") are a bird genus within the family of penguins (Spheniscidae). Without exception, they are black and white and molt at the end of the respective breeding season. All species are very social, the chinstrap penguin forms the largest penguin colony on Zavodovski Island with an estimated 600,000 breeding pairs.

There are three types of long-tailed penguins: Gentoo penguin ( P. papua ), Adelie penguin ( P. adeliae ) and Chinstrap penguin ( P. antarctica ), which is also known as the thilled penguin .
