Pyrenophora tritici-repentis , also known under its anamorphic Drechslera tritici-repentis , is a fungus from the order of the Pleosporales thatcausesthe plant disease DTR leaf drought , especially in wheat . The reduction in photosynthesis can reduce the yield of the harvest byup to 30%.

features

The fungus grows on various types of grass and cereals. The conical, serpentine-shaped basal cell of the conidia is an important distinguishing feature . These are straight or slightly curved, cylindrical and apically rounded. They are straw-colored, have 5–6 septa and are 80–250 × 14–20 µm in size. The sporulation takes place in a humid chamber (similar to Drechslera teres , the causative agent of the reticulate disease in barley ).

Clinical picture

Roundish, evenly light brown colored spots form on the leaves close to the ground. Secondary infections are identified by dark brown points of infection with a diameter of approx. 3 mm, surrounded by a yellow halo. Over time, these leaf spots converge, causing leaf drought from the tip.

Infestation-promoting factors

Infested harvest residues on the soil surface, as often occurs with mulch sowing , as well as infected seeds are beneficial for the fungus. Stress factors such as lack of water or occasional rainfall can also promote the spread.
