Pyrrhichos
Pyrrhichos (Πύρριχος) was an ancient mountain town in Taygetus , in the interior of the Mani peninsula.
location
The location of Pyrrhichos could be localized by inscriptions that name the place name, as well as by information from the ancient writer Pausanias near today's Kavalo. In addition, it is assumed that the modern field name Purkos (Ποῦρκος) east of Kavalo continues the ancient name. The mountain town was located in a remote fertile plateau and was supplied with drinking water from a strong spring.
Finds
In addition to some inscriptions, a colossal woman torso and other litter finds, remains of imperial houses and a Roman thermal bath were found here. Pillars have been found in the north of modern Kavalo; an ancient temple is believed to be there.
history
According to Pausanias, Pyrrhichos had a well and sanctuaries for Apollon Amazonios and Artemis Astrateia. The place was originally a Periökenstadt Sparta and later belonged to the Eleutherolakonen . Because of its remote location, it has always been of little importance.
